When my friend Josh approached me to design the packaging for his unnamed perfume line, I kindly declined. It was too much work for too little money and what he needed wasn't a package but a brand. After the countless compliments I received wearing the prototype perfumes I returned with a proposition: Make me a partner and I'll do all the work for free. Several years, multiple packages, and countless website iterations later, our esoteric brand is one of the most beloved niche perfume houses in the world. After the disasterous 2016 election, like many, my wife and I were scrambling for ways to contribute. There was a glut of requests for financial assistance from worthy non-profits all over the country but we barely had enough to keep ourselves afloat. What if, instead of giving a little to each of these organizations, we invested in our own skills as a style editor and a creative director and built a brand that would allow us to raise even more money for the causes we care about. Since then, we've donated thousands of dollars more than we would have ever been capable of otherwise and have been invited to collaborate with such legends as Elizabeth Warren and The Portland Trailblazers.
